The genre combines elements of the riddim and UK bass and often plays with heavy distortion. 

Early bass house filled the entire frequency spectrum, during the drop, with a single bass pattern; however, more recently, many bass house producers have found inspiration from other subgenres of house, particularly tech house, and separated the bass pattern from the melody, notably Tchami, Joyride, Jauz, Habstrakt, Jace Mek, and Loopers.
